The Ngāti Rangi Herbarium is a repository of rongoa plant species in our rohe.
Our team have focused solely on rongoa plants in the lower and upper alpine area.
The purpose of this work is to learn as a whānau, hapū and iwi, about rongoā plants, where they are located, what we have in our rohe and why they grow here.
It aims to grow our matauranga as an iwi about the rongoa, why it is important, make rongoa from the plants and foster connection to the whenua, ngāhere and maunga.
The herbarium also provides a resource for those of our uri who wish to explore scientific research and education in the biodiversity field.
The plant specimen have been stored appropriately, databased, and arranged systematically to ensure quick access for students, researchers, whānau, hapū, iwi and the wider community.
As we face the changes in our climate and the decline of species in our area and around the world, preserving our rongoa for our rohe is vitally important to acknowledge our tuakana.
