Pae Whakahaumaru

Those who keep the fire burning over night – they stay awake so no-one will be cold, watch that the fire is free from threat, keeping our ahi kaa alive.

Pae Whakahaumaru are those who protect the people and the land from harm. They are the navigators like the keka who inform the people of what to be aware of, to notice that which the house of Paerangi protects Paratetaitonga; that which wards off the southern winds.

Pae Whakahaumaru contributes to the protection and knowing of our pristine landscapes and create new pathways through nature and culture.

The team build capability and capacity within local uri living at home to provide support for local agencies who govern open spaces, natural resources/environment areas and public conservation land. The aspiration is to connect uri to the whenua they belong to through the practice of kaitiakitanga and learning how we can look after our whenua.
