Iwi Wānanga

Promoting awareness and respect, our traditions and taiao

In addition to our formal education programmes, Pae Whakahā team members conduct a number of informal wānanga designed to promote awareness and respect for our cultural traditions and our taiao.

Our kaimahi are experts in both biological and cultural monitoring. We use this expertise in teaching Ruapehu college rangatahi in their field trips to the awa.

Pae Whakahā host rangatahi from around the region in the kiwi forever programme. Part of this involves teaching them about what makes a healthy awa and how to recognise one.

Following a disastrous mass death of kōura in the Waitangi Stream in April 2024, Pae Whakahā have embarked on a project to protect kōura and to teach local uri about kōura monitoring techniques. This is part of a community grant from Horizons Regional Council.
