Bachelor of Teacher Training

Rārangahia te taura whiri Weave the plaited cord

Kia toitū te kupu So that our message will survive

Kia toitū te mana Our prestige will endure

Kia toitū te reo As will our language endure

Kia toitū te whenua And our histories and whenua remain

The Bachelor of teaching (Primary) degree is an intensive two year pathway into the teaching profession for local experienced teacher aides, those with a limited authority to teach and people who are actively working with tamariki and rangatahi and making a positive difference in education.

This programme started in 2026, is designed for people who are already working within our schools and want to gain the Bachelor of teaching qualification kanohi ki te kanohi without compromising on quality or having to relocate for further education. This unique programme offers support through a blend of academic study, workplace-based learning, and mentored teaching practice. Allowing tauira to build confidence in professional capability, while being closely guided by experienced kaiako and mentors in authentic learning contexts.

To ensure success the programme is delivered through a layer of support networks, including:

  • Waikato University as the tertiary education provider, who deliver academic learning and professional studies in wānanga hosted by our local regions.
  • Schools, tumuaki and kaiako support provided during practicum.
  • Mentoring and pastoral support.
  • The following iwi are working collaboratively to support the cohort of tauira throughout their 2 year study period. Ngā Hapū o Mōkai Pātea, Ngāti Rangi, Te Korowai o Wainuiārua, Ngāti Hāua, and Ngāti Tūwharetoa, grounding the programme in local tikanga, mātauranga Māori, and aspirations.
  • Whānau and wider community networks play an essential role in supporting tauira throughout their learning journey.
