What is Ngā Waihua o Paerangi?
As part of the Ngāti Rangi settlement, Te Tōtarahoe o Paerangi Trust was established to receive and manage the settlement redress, on behalf and for the benefit of Ngāti Rangi. On the 15th of September 2018 and by resolution of the board members, the name Ngāti Rangi Trust was changed to Ngā Waihua o Paerangi Trust.
Founding vision of Ngā Waihua o Paerangi
On 19 September 2009, Ngāti Rangi launched its strategic plan, determining a vision for the iwi that reaches across all its work and decision-making.

What is Whiria Ngā Hua?
Whiria Ngā Hua is an enterprise fund that represents that whānau have the solutions within
them; direct local funding invests in whānau to define the issues that are critical to them.
Whiria Ngā Hua, is able to fund kaupapa that responds to the needs of whānau.
What are the opening and closing dates of the application?
Whiria Ngā Hua will be opened on 31st August running until 27th September 2026.
What is the maximum amount of funding available in Whiria Ngā Hua?
The funds will be for a maximum of $10,000 per application set against the range of criteria determined to maximise whānau outcomes (see below).
What is the context for proposals to be assessed in Whiria Ngā Hua?
- Impact: that the initiative will contribute to thriving whānau;
- Viability: that the idea can be delivered;
- Local level solutions: does the initiative have credibility and confidence with local landscape and/or regional environment? (i.e. is it kāinga focused)
- Inter-generational transmission: that the initiatives recognise the link and role of each generation both past present and future;
- Collective identity and ownership: is the focus rather than individual needs.
What are the criteria that proposals need to demonstrate in Whiria Ngā Hua?
Initiatives must demonstrate their understanding of the following outcomes:
Ngāti Rangi Principles (choose two)
- Ko te Kāhui Maunga te mātāpuna o te ora: We understand that the Kāhui Maunga is the source of our origin and well-being as Ngāti Rangi
- Me karioi te noho: We understand that we, as Ngāti Rangi, are here forever
- Kia mana ai ngā kōrero tuku iho: We understand that the teachings of our tūpuna are upheld
- Ko te anga whakamua ki āpōpō: We understand that decisions must be future focused.
Whānau Ora Pou (choose three)
- Pou Tahi: Whānau are self-managing and empowered leaders
- Pou Rua: Whānau in Ruapehu are leading healthy lifestyles
- Pou Toru: Whānau are participating fully in society
- Pou Whā: Whānau are confidently participating in Te Ao Māori
- Pou Rima: Whānau are economically secure and successfully involved in wealth creation
- Pou Ono: Whānau are cohesive, resillient and nurturing
- Pou Whitu: Whānau are responsible stewards of their living and natural environment
What is Whānau Ora?
Whānau Ora is an inclusive approach to support whānau to work together as whānau, rather than separately with individual family members.
What if an applicant is under 18 years of age?
Contracts entered into by a minor (those aged under 18) generally can’t be enforced (i.e. we cannot force you to do what you had promised in the contract) unless the court or the Disputes Tribunal thinks the contract is fair and reasonable.
Applicants who are under 18 years of age will need an adult over the age of 18 years of age to act as your guarantor/mentor.
